A WORD FROM BOB

After 3 years of singing on NBC’s Sing Along With Mitch, I had a yearning to do something similar for children. As a professional musician doing family concerts with symphony orchestras, I wanted young children to hear the best musicians possible, all playing acoustic instruments. I hoped it might inspire them to learn to become active music makers.

I called my good friend Bill Usher who helped me with The Baby Record and Songs & Games For Toddlers. Bill and I researched hundreds of songs from the best children’s artists, young and old. Along with some of our personal favorites, we narrowed the list down to over 65 all-time greatest hits that we hoped children would love to learn, becoming a part of their childhood memories.

Bill assembled a talented group of musicians. As they were all stars in their own right, they were only given simple single-line lead sheets with lyrics and chords. No written out arrangements. Every note you hear was their own personal interpretation of what they felt at the moment. The sessions were thrilling for all of us. It felt like a great band you might hear in Nashville or New Orleans and it was tremendously inspiring to perform with them. After a few weeks in a studio near Toronto, we had so many songs that we decided to split up the album into 2 volumes and put about 30 songs on each.

I hope you enjoy these songs with your children as much as we enjoyed making them.
